What’s Going On With The Sun?

The interesting photo is the first one, which is very dark around much of the sun.  This is very different from your normal SOHO photos.  The idea is that either the sun is very weak, perhaps historically weak, or more likely, something has been blacked out in the most recent photo.  You decide.

This morning, the internet is abuzz with rumors of Sun doom due to the following image taken from NASA’s SOHO website. Is this merely people over reacting to the approaching Mayan end date of December 21st, 2012 or is there something to the Mayan end date afterall? Take a look at this image from today (top) and compare it to another recent image of the sun (below). What is going on with the far side of the sun? Why does it appear to be ‘blacked out’? SOHO watchers share that this has never happened before in all of their years of ‘sun watching’. The excellent video at the bottom of the story shares that many people believe that some type of an ‘exotic solar flare event’ will accompany the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21st, 2012. Is that what is now beginning to occur which is causing this anomaly?

According to Spaceweather.com, we have nothing to worry about as sun activity is quite low.

ANOTHER QUIET DAY: With all of the sunspots on the Earthside of the sun in decay, solar activiy is low. NOAA forecasters estimate a slight 1% chance of strong solar flares during the next 24 hours. Solar flare alerts: text, voice.

The below video has lots of info on the whole Mayan long count calendar and the predictions associated with it, as well as legends and prophetic stories attached to other ancient cultures.  For your consideration.
