Why the Bible Is Our Highest Authority

Good stuff....

We've all got someone or something that is the highest authority in our life, and sometimes that's the three-pound brain between our ears. At Mars Hill, our authority is the Bible, and we begin with the assumption that it is always truthful—not that that means it's a book that's always easy to understand.

This clip is of Pastor Mark preaching at Mars Hill Portland, and is excerpted from the sermon, "All Things to All People," a road trip led by Pastor Mark through a handful of Mars Hill churches as he preaches out of 1 Corinthians 9 on what it means to be churches devoted to God's mission to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations.

Every good Bible teacher points you to Jesus -- Pastor Mark Driscoll

Every good Bible teacher points you to Jesus Christ. A good Bible teacher understands that the Scripture is for us, but it's not about us—it's about Jesus. Any time that the Bible is open and Jesus is not proclaimed, the Bible was not rightly opened.

This clip is excerpted from the sermon "Will You Listen?" the third part of our sermon series, Malachi: Living for a Legacy, preached by Pastor Mark Driscoll out of Malachi 2:1-9 at Mars Hill Downtown Bellevue and released on December 8, 2013.

If you do not see yourself as bad then you can't see God as very good

Good stuff on how we should think on our Christian faith...

If you are a Christian, God is not punishing you. Jesus was already punished in your place. But God disciplines the children whom he loves.

Jesus shows us what it's like to live a Spirit-empowered life

Jesus' life and power are not just to be admired; his power is also to be experienced. Jesus didn't cheat but came to earth as a man and showed us what it's like to live a perfect, Spirit-filled, Spirit-empowered, Spirit-led life.

This clip is excerpted from the sermon "Jesus Empowered by the Spirit," the first part of our sermon series Acts: Empowered for Jesus' Mission. It was preached by Pastor Mark Driscoll out of Acts 1:1--11 at Mars Hill Downtown Bellevue and released on May 26.

God Is a Loving Father, Not a List Giver -- Pastor Mark Driscoll

If you are reading from outside the U.S.A., you might be surprised, but increasingly people of all ages have no concept of right or wrong, of good or evil.  So the conviction that might normally come from scripture is lost on more and more, especially among the younger generation.  So there's a need for a comprehensive approach to sharing the gospel and Who Jesus Christ Is, because without that they are lost.  Some good stuff here....

The law doesn't make much sense if you don't know the law-giver. Presenting the Ten Commandments to non-Christians is not helpful unless we also tell them about Jesus. We're not saved by the law but by Jesus keeping the law.

This clip is excerpted from the sermon "X. Do Not Covet," the tenth and final part of our sermon series Ten Commandments: Set Free to Live Free. It was preached by Pastor Mark Driscoll out of Exodus 20:17 at Mars Hill Downtown Bellevue and released on November 17, 2013.

The Old Testament is all about Jesus -- Mark Driscoll

The whole Bible is about Jesus. The law shows us our sin and our need for a Savior. As we read the law, we realize God is holy, perfect, and good, and that I have fallen short and have failed him. But then Jesus comes as our Savior. When you go to the law, see what you have failed to do, what Jesus has done, what Jesus wants to do for you, what Jesus can do in you, and what Jesus can do through you.

Don't Be Fooled -- Pastor Mark Driscoll

Christians must be people of truth, no matter what the price.  The beauty of truth, even those hard and painful truths, is freedom.  If you tell the truth, you are free from the sin of lying and deception.  Let truth be a hallmark, an identifying feature of who you are today...

‘Complete Anarchy’: Famed Pastor Issues Major Wake-Up Call for Christians About the Dire State of American Culture

TheBlaze’s Carly Hoilman contributed to this report.

Pastor Mark Driscoll of Mars Hill Church in Seattle, Wa., is on a mission to wake Christians up from the illusion that faith is alive and well in America.

The centerpiece of Driscoll’s new book titled, ”A Call to Resurgence: Will Christianity Have a Funeral or a Future?,” is that we’re living in a “post-Christian culture — a culture fundamentally at odds with faith in Jesus.”

Culture Is Quickly Shifting

The pastor recently told TheBlaze that he believes cultural norms are rapidly shifting in American society and that these changes come at the same time that Christianity is losing its place of prominence.

“A commitment to secularism to pluralism has really come very, very rapidly, and certain issues like gay marriage have accelerated and highlighted that,” Driscoll said. “More biblical, conservative traditions…values have gone from being respected to really despised in very short order.”
Driscoll explained that 40 years ago, homosexuality was still listed in psychological manuals and textbooks as a mental disorder, and now it is considered a civil right. He added, “That’s a quick flip.”
“We are living in a post-Christian culture — a culture fundamentally at odds with faith in Jesus.”

He believes that there’s been a paradigm shift in society from “morality to personality.”
Rather than moral absolutes governing what’s right or wrong, Driscoll said that there’s a general view that people should be true to themselves — that they should essentially stand by their feelings and desires.

“We’ve shifted from a worldview where there is a God who makes laws, and they apply to you, to whether or not there is a God it does not matter — ‘I don’t recognize any laws external to me. The only thing that guides me is my own internal convictions,’” he said. “Authority has shifted from external to internal, from God to me. And what you end up with is not a discussion of morality but a defense of personality. And that’s the world we live in.”

Driscoll believes that there is “a culture of complete anarchy in the name of tolerance and diversity.”
“One in four women sexual assaulted, one in six men, people that are sexually addicted, sexually assaulted, sexually abused, rampant debt, broken families, suicidal,” he told TheBlaze. “The number one category of prescription medication is antidepressants. Somebody’s gotta stand up and say, ‘This ain’t working — we gotta try something else.’

The Fools' Parade -- Pastor Mark Driscoll

You aren't a Christian just because you say you are.  You aren't a Christian just because you attend a church.  You aren't a Christian just because you tithe.  You are a Christian because you are willing to live and die for the name of Jesus Christ, you are willing to live and die for his will to be done, you are willing to live and die for His glory.  The worst thing you could ever do is pretend to be a Christian.  That is a judgment you don't want to face.

Calvinism and Arminianism

I've lived under the very strong conviction that "predestination" and "free will" are both completely true, as both are written clearly in the scriptures.  The fact that our minds cannot conceive of this fully is to be expected, as we are not God, and not capable of fully comprehending the things of Him. We see partial truths now, but the idea that God's perfect mercy and forgiveness is compatible with His perfect justice is beyond the  mind of any human being to full comprehend and answer questions knowledgeably.  Let us be content to say God's word is true, and we will know it all one day soon, oh so very soon.....

Four Things We Need To Know About Fear

One of the shortest and most oft repeated sermons in the Bible is "fear not".  Our only fear should be the fear of the Lord.

Is homosexuality a sin?

Kudos to Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church for taking these difficult questions during the services and being prepared to answer them in a Biblical way.

Why the Bible Is Our Highest Authority

Great truth simply presented here....who is your highest authority?  As Christians, God's word is everything.  It defines our beliefs, and our beliefs define our life, the life we live day-by-day, moment-by-moment.  Everything we see and think and do is filtered through this understanding.  Above and beyond all of this, we place our past, present and future well-being into the hands of our Lord and God, all because of the Bible.
