The Lord's Supper and the New Covenant

What is a covenant? 

A covenant is a treaty or binding agreement between two parties.  The Hebrew word berith which is translated covenant literally means cutting, implying the fact that a covenant was confirmed with the shedding of the blood of a sacrifice.  This meant that a covenant was a blood oath. 

The New Covenant is primarily stated in contrast to the Old (Mosaic) Covenant.  These two covenants are the only conditional covenants God makes in the scriptures.  God’s promises in the covenants are eternal, but the agreement itself depends upon men accepting the terms of agreement. 

What are some of the differences between the New and Old Covenants? 

- The Old Covenants terms/rules had to be learned  (Exodus 24:12)

- The Old Covenant had to be obeyed according to the ability of men (Romans 7:5)

- The Old Covenant was confirmed with the blood of animals (Exodus 24:8)

- The Old Covenant had severe consequences for failure to obey (Deuteronomy 28:15-68) 

- The New Covenant is Holy Spirit taught (Jeremiah 31:33-34)

- The ability to obey the New Covenant is empowered by the Holy Spirit of God (Hebrews 9:14)

- The New Covenant is confirmed by the blood of the Son of God  (Matthew 26:28)

- The New Covenant is crowned with God’s mercy and forgiveness for those times men fail to obey (Hebrews 8:12) 

The first Lord’s Supper was a Passover observance by Jesus and His disciples.  (Matthew 26:19-20)  It was also the institution of the New Covenant.  It makes sense for us to honor the New Covenant on Passover.

During the Passover observance, it was customary for the head of the feast (Jesus in this case) to lead the table in remembrance of the four great “I WILLS”, promises of God to Israel as stated in Exodus 6:6-7.  These were memorialized by the taking of a cup of wine for each declaration.  The four promises and cups were: 

- I WILL bring you out (the cup of sanctification)

- I WILL bring you out of bondage (cup of deliverance/praise)

- I WILL redeem you (the cup of redemption)

- I WILL take you to me for a people (cup of acceptance/praise) 

On the night of the first Lord’s Supper, Jesus took the first three cups with His disciples.  The last cup, the one in which He said “this is my blood of the new testament (covenant) which is shed for many for the redemption of sins” (Matthew 26:28) was the cup of redemption.  Redemption (Hebrew gaal) means to be purchased out of slavery, or to pay a ransom and free.  It had to be done by someone who was a kinsman (family).  Jesus paid the purchase price (His blood) to redeem us from slavery to sin (Romans 6:12-16).  Jesus refused to take the fourth cup (the cup of acceptance) because Israel had not yet accepted Him as Messiah. (Matthew 27:20-25, Zechariah 12:10).  The next time that He takes the cup will be with all believers and redeemed Israel at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-9). 

Some notes on the Lord’s Supper taken from the early church -  

- Important passages for meditation before taking the Lords Supper include Matthew 26:26-28, John 6:22-71 and 1 Corinthians 11:20-34.

- The Lord’s Supper was done weekly, sometimes with every meal

- The Lord’s Supper is a spiritual and physical blessing to all who take it worthily

- The Lord’s Supper brought sickness and death to believers who took it unworthily (1 Corinthians 11:20-34)

- Unleavened bread (symbolizing purity) and red wine sometimes mixed with water were normally used

- Because the Lord’s supper was normally done in small groups, personal confession was often practiced before taking it, to cleanse the conscience and help the believer take it in a worthy manner

- The point of the Lords Supper is to remember what Jesus did for us (Crucifixion) and to remember our commitment to the New Covenant with Him

If I had to guess at what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that.” Basically the first group believes some science is good but there are certain scientists and researchers who are playing with things they have no business playing with and could very well cause the full destruction of mankind.

Plan to Sequence the Genome of Millions Gets Boost from Obama Administration - Are They Looking for Descendants of the Nephilim?

The article concerns recent decisions of the Obama administration to fund a massive human genome sequencing project to gather DNA samples from millions of people, and then to archive these in a database:

U.S. to Develop DNA Study of One Million People An Obama initiative seeks to channel a torrent of gene information into treatments for cancer, other diseases.

The aim here, ostensibly, is to develop a new paradigm of medicine, one that abandons the current paradigm of "one size fits all," and that taylors new genetically-based therapies directly to the individual:

"Precision medicine refers to treatments tailored to a person’s genetic profile, an idea already transforming how doctors fight cancer and some rare diseases.
"The Obama plan, including support for studies of cancer and rare disease, is part of a shift away from “one-size-fits-all” medicine, Jo Handelsman, associate director for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a briefing yesterday. She called precision medicine “a game changer that holds the potential to revolutionize how we approach health in this country and around the world.”
"The White House said the largest part of the money, $130 million, would go to the National Institutes of Health in order to create a population-scale study of how peoples’ genes, environment, and lifestyle affect their health."(Emphasis added)

As we've pointed out here many times, the new medical technologies - from genetically based therapies to nanotechnologies - do have the potential to change the basic paradigm of medicine very dramatically. But the technology has another implication, one hinted at the very end of the article:

"David Goldstein, director of a new institute for genome medicine at Columbia University, called the Obama plan part of an irreversible drive toward obtaining more and more complete genetic information on people as part of routine medicine. 'The writing is on the wall,' Goldstein said. 'We are all going to be sequenced; the question is just who does it and what is done with it. The challenge will be to do good things with the data.'” (Emphasis added)

Indeed, again, note the push here: We are all going to be sequenced. There is no debate, no ifs ands or buts. In the light of our blog about the chipping being done in Sweden at a Swedish firm, the portent and implications here are obvious: imagine those chips being made to interact on an individual basis. Or worse: Imagine one's genetic date being used not to create individual-specific or individually-target therapies, but rather, as Goldstein hints,being used to create a kind of "genetic bullet" specific to one individual, or even a particular family, targetable perhaps to "x" members of the wider family.

 

But then there occurs this intriguing bit of commentary:

"Officials indicated that patients might have more access to data generated about them than is usually the case in research studies. That is partly because scientists will need the ability to re-contact them, should their genes prove interesting." (Emphases added)

"Interesting" is a word that can do all sorts of duty in this context, and I suspect, in my high-octane speculation of the day, that my old intuition that I've long held with respect to genetics research is true, namely,  that under the cloak and cover of "genetic research" for "medicinal purposes", or even under the guise of covert genetic research for "bio-weapons research purposes", something very different may ultimately lie at the core of the elite's push to gather a large human DNA database. That something would be, via the techniques of mapping humanity's genetic history, the elites are looking for something, for the confirmations - if any - of those old stories of the gods coming down from heaven and siring chimerical human offspring, and perhaps even looking for confirmation of their own families' ties to those stories. To fill in those stories with any sort of reliable genetic confirmation would have to drastically expand the database on which current genetic histories of humanity's various haplogroups are reconstructed. Those studies have been based on narrow samplings of populations around the world. But add millions of samples from around the world, and those histories could not only be expanded, but given a great deal of detail. If this speculation is anywhere close to the truth (and it's a mighty big if), then one should expect that similar studies of miilions of people will be undertaken, not just in the USA, but around the world. If, suddenly, say, the Japanese government decides to do the same with millions of Japanese, and Indonesia and India and Russia the same, then, perhaps, we'll have a little more of an indicator that the high octane speculation might actually be the case.

Caedmon, 1st Anglo-Saxon Christian Poet

Have you ever felt you didn't fit? Everyone else had a bike but you didn't...everyone else seemed able to work the Rubik's cube but you couldn't...everyone else could pray out loud but you were too afraid...you were always the last chosen when team players were picked...

That is how it was for Caedmon. He was a stable-hand at the monastery of Whitby in the seventh century. The Anglo-Saxons loved singing. It was common for men to gather of an evening and share tales through song. Everyone was expected to contribute. Caedmon, however, slipped away because he was either too shy to sing or simply had nothing to share.

According to the church historian Bede, who was born about seven years before Caedmon died, Caedmon slipped out of the hall one night to tend the animals while the others sang. Afterward, he fell asleep. A man spoke to him in a vision, saying, "Caedmon, sing me something." Caedmon replied that he could not sing. That was why he was out here, not in the hall. "Yet you could sing," said the man, and suggested Caedmon sing "the beginning of all things." In his dream, Caedmon began to sing his great Hymn of Creation:

Now let us praise the guardian of the heavenly kingdom,
the power of the Creator
and the counsel of His mind,
the works of the Father of glory:
how He, the eternal Lord, originated every marvel...

When Caedmon awoke, he found he remembered the verses perfectly and was able to sing them. The monks were convinced he had been given a gift by God. Whitby's famous abbess, Hild (Hilda) convinced Caedmon to become a monk.

Although he never learned to read or write, Caedmon listened as the monks told the Bible stories and then he turned them into Anglo-Saxon poems that the common folk could understand. Many others imitated him in this, with the result that Bible teaching found its way to the people as it had never done before in England.

Caedmon was the first poet to produce vivid Christian verses in the Anglo-Saxon tongue. Unfortunately, only a few of his lines survive. He died around 680. The people of England remembered him as a saint. His feast is on this day, February 11.

Sea Monster Vs. Submarine

The oceans of the world have long been the alleged haunt of various merfolk, sea serpents, sea monsters, and assorted hulking, mysterious beasts beyond the fringes of our understanding. Since mankind first took to the seas and started our odyssey into this vast, watery domain, sailors have been captivated by such fantastical creatures, and maritime history and folklore is thickly steeped in countless tales of mysterious monsters from the depths. However, sometimes these creatures jump from out of the cloudy realm of legend and fleetingly glimpsed anomalies to come violently crashing into our reality, indeed into our nightmares. Such is the story of the numerous accounts of sea monsters boldly attacking seagoing vessels such as boats, ships, and yes, even submarines. In fact some of the most harrowing sea monster accounts there are involve submarines. It seems that in some cases, mysterious sea creatures do not appreciate sharing the depths with our steel contraptions. How did these encounters between man and beast turn out? Let’s take a look.

Certainly one of the most well-known accounts of an alleged sea monster attack on a submarine occurred during World War I, when German submarines prowled the waters of the Atlantic looking to make trouble. For one German submarine, the UB-85, on April 30, 1918 it was trouble that found them. The story goes that the submarine was discovered floating on the surface by the British patrol boat Coreopsis. At the time the U-boats, as the German submarines were called, were a fairly novel and highly feared weapon of war, known for being invisible, deadly killers of the high seas, so it was quite a fortunate turn of events for the British to come across one that was basically a sitting duck out in plain view. They immediately fired upon it and the submarine began sinking without any attempt to retaliate. Things became even weirder when the British vessel approached and the submarine crew quickly surrendered without any resistance. The crew of the British ship was mystified. The only time most crews saw a U-boat coming was when a torpedo was snaking through the sea towards them, and to have a whole submarine just sit and wait to be sunk and its crew apprehended without incident was mind bogglingly strange.

It wasn’t until the Germans were brought aboard and the U-boat captain, a Captain Gunther Krech, was questioned that the reason became both clearer and more bizarre. Krech allegedly reported that the submarine had surfaced during the night for the purpose of recharging its batteries, during which there had been a violent surge of frothing water off the starboard bow. When Kech and some crew members had gone to investigate, a creature the captain described as a “strange beast” had suddenly erupted forth from the cold, dark water and begun clambering up the side of the ship, which had caused the whole submarine to start listing to the side. The beast was described as being enormous, with a small head with large eyes deeply set in a horned skull and a large mouth with sharp teeth that glinted in the moonlight. This strange monster was then claimed to have reached the forward mount gun and to have begun ferociously attacking it, chomping down on the weapon with its formidable jaws and thrashing back and forth.

Fearing that the submarine would continue to tilt under the creature’s weight until the open hatch hit the sea and sank the sub, all available crewmen had opened fire on the mysterious attacker, yet the thing had refused to let go of the gun mount. It apparently had taken a sustained, intense volley of gunfire to finally make the monster relinquish its iron grip, after which it disappeared into the black sea, its ultimate fate unknown. Final score: Submarine-1, Sea Monster-0.

Joseph Lister

Joseph Lister belongs on a short list of the world's greatest doctors. His research taught him that killing germs would save lives and allow surgeons to operate inside bodies. Fierce resistance met his ideas and he had to defend them over the opposition of England's top physicians. But when he died on this day, February 10, 1912, he was recognized around the world as one of the great benefactors of mankind.

Modern surgery is possible thanks to the persistence and faith of Quaker-born Joseph Lister.
Before he turned sixteen, Joseph had made many dissections under the microscope and announced he would become a surgeon. His surprised mother did not discourage him, although no one else in the family had ever entered that profession. Friends and family wondered if he wasn't too kind-hearted and shy to handle the terrible screams he would hear and the pain and pus he would witness.

Joseph became a doctor partly because he was a Quaker. Quakers were forbidden to enter Cambridge or Oxford universities where law and other professions were taught. "Godless" London University was the only great institution in England that opened its doors to a Quaker, so Joseph studied there. While still a student there, he authored a pamphlet on the "Use of the Microscope in Medicine" using a microscope given him by his father. (His father, J. J. Lister, a wine-distiller, was co-inventor of the compound microscope.)

With the discovery of chloroform, surgical pain was reduced. Even so, more than half of all patients died from gangrene after they were operated on. Dirty conditions allowed germs to infect them.
Joseph Lister became a good surgeon through careful study and hard work. He pioneered the use of "catgut" ligatures (actually the intestines of cows or sheep). But his greatest contribution was to show that infections were caused by germs. A friend had shown him an article by Louis Pasteur.

Lister hunted for something that would kill germs while not injuring body tissues. He discovered that carbolic acid (phenol) kills germs. Its use greatly decreased death rates after surgery. However, the wet carbolic acid made a doctor's hand's raw during surgery and bandages soaked in it irritated patients' skin, making them miserable, which is why hospitals today try to create aseptic conditions instead-- that is, to isolate the patient from germs.

Because the woman he married was not a Quaker, Lister had to leave the Society. He faithfully attended the Scottish Episcopal Church thereafter for the rest of his life. A man of true Christian character, no one ever heard him raise his voice in anger. If ever he did anything to give offense, he was quick to apologize. He said of himself, "I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity." He told a graduating class: "It is our proud office to tend the fleshly tabernacle of the immortal spirit, and our path, if rightly followed, will be guided by unfettered truth and love unfeigned. In pursuit of this noble and holy calling I wish you all God-speed."

U.S. Media Blackout: Italian Courts Rule Vaccines Cause Autism

Recent Italian Court Decisions on Vaccines and Autism

On September 23, 2014, an Italian court in Milan award compensation to a boy for vaccine-induced autism. (See the Italian document here.) A childhood vaccine against six childhood diseases caused the boy’s permanent autism and brain damage.
While the Italian press has devoted considerable attention to this decision and its public health implications, the U.S. press has been silent.

Italy’s National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program

Like the U.S., Italy has a national vaccine injury compensation program to give some financial support to those people who are injured by compulsory and recommended vaccinations. The Italian infant plaintiff received three doses of GlaxoSmithKline’s Infanrix Hexa, a hexavalent vaccine administered in the first year of life. These doses occurred from March to October 2006. The vaccine is to protect children from polio, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, pertussis and Haemophilus influenza type B. In addition to these antigens, however, the vaccine then contained thimerosal, the mercury-containing preservative, aluminum, an adjuvant, as well as other toxic ingredients. The child regressed into autism shortly after receiving the three doses.
When the parents presented their claim for compensation first to the Ministry of Health, as they were required to do, the Ministry rejected it. Therefore, the family sued the Ministry in a court of general jurisdiction, an option which does not exist in the same form in the U.S.

Court Decision: Mercury and Aluminum in Vaccine Caused Autism

Based on expert medical testimony, the court concluded that the child more likely than not suffered autism and brain damage because of the neurotoxic mercury, aluminum and his particular susceptibility from a genetic mutation. The Court also noted that Infanrix Hexa contained thimerosal, now banned in Italy because of its neurotoxicity, “in concentrations greatly exceeding the maximum recommended levels for infants weighing only a few kilograms.”
Presiding Judge Nicola Di Leo considered another piece of damning evidence: a 1271-page confidential GlaxoSmithKline report (now available on the Internet). This industry document provided ample evidence of adverse events from the vaccine, including five known cases of autism resulting from the vaccine’s administration during its clinical trials (see table at page 626, excerpt below).

Cold Fusion Race Heating Up?

Here's one that is happening almost as fast as the predictions that it would happen.

Now there's a hugely important point to notice in this article, and that is that the Russians have apparently successfully duplicated Dr. Andrea Rossi's cold fusion E-CAT reactor, and though the results are more modest than his claims, nonetheless with significant results. Referencing the report of the Universities of Uppsala and Bologna last year, and their conclusion that Rossi's device is indeed producing low energy nuclear reactions, the so-called Lugano Report, about which we blogged last year, and about which there has been considerable controversy, the article notes,

"The report was promptly savaged by sceptics, pointing out that Rossi was present for the test and questioning how independent it was. Steven B. Krivit, editor of New Energy Times, headlined his account  "Rossi Handles Samples in Alleged Independent Test of His Device".
"The arguments about the Lugano Report continue, meanwhile there has been an even more surprising development. Prof Alexander Parkhomov of Lomonosov Moscow State University has published a paper describing his successful replication of the E-Cat, based on the available information about it. The paper is in Russian; there is a link and commentary and video in English on E-Cat World. Parkhomov's results are more modest, but the energy output of his cloned E-Cat claimed to be up to 2.74 times as great as the input.
"Parkhomov presented his results earlier this week at a cold fusion seminar at the Research Institute for Nuclear Power Plant Operation in Moscow."

In other words, the Russians are in the cold fusion game and in a major way, and given the context of this week's "space focus" in our blogs, this again provides an interesting context on just what appears to be going on. The pattern we have seen in the past few months of last year, and continuing into this year and perhaps - depending on one's perceptions - even intensifying, is (1) there seems to be a push underway to give attention to stories involving space, and in particular revelations or talk of some cutting edge technology in that respect, and (2) there is also, at the same time, a push underway to give attention to stories involving alternative energy technologies, in this case, Rossi's E-CAT cold fusion reactor (or, let us recall, Lockheed-Martin's curious cold-fusion story that was disclosed mere days after the release of the Lugano Report, a story that, you'll recall, pictured a device looking suspiciously like Philo Farnsworth's plasmator and fusor patents of the 1960s). In the context of the second aspect of this pattern, you'll recall that last year also saw the announcement that the Rockefeller Foundations were divesting themselves of petroleum securities in their portfolios.
Even more curious in this article is its mention of yet another strange conspiracy theory in connection to cold fusion:

"None of this is likely to bother sceptics in the global energy market, though there are signs of panic among conspiracy theorists. Russian media has repeated a rumour that President Obama discussed Chinese E-Cat production under licence with Xi Jinping in his recent visit, a move that might destroy Russia's vital energy exports." (Emphasis added)

Given the rather close connection between "Russian media" and the Russian government itself, one wonders just how reliable the rumor is. But let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the rumor is true. President Obama would not be in any position to offer a license to Xi Jinping or the Chinese government for the E-Cat process. It is not his process to offer, and, as the article indicates, Parkhamov's process is already open. So what might the truth, if any, be behind the rumor? Again, for the sake of argument, for Obama to offer any such thing to the Chinese would, on the face of it, make no geopolitical sense, since his administration is "pivoting to the Pacific" precisely to counteract growing Chinese power and influence in the region. But again, assume for the sake of argument that the rumor is true and that he made some sort of cold fusion offer to the Chinese government. He could only offer what the USA has some degree of control over, and that brings to mind once again the Lockheed-Martin cold fusion claims that appeared shortly after the Lugano Report's release.
Whether true or not (and I am strongly inclined to believe it isn't) the rumor nevertheless suggests - when added to the Rockefeller announcement of last year, and the emerging strange pattern of space-and-alternative-energy technology stories that seem to be on the uptake - that one thing that we are perhaps looking at is a new geopolitical game emerging, one involving space, its commercialization, and technologies that are, for the moment, and in the public venue at least, still the stuff of science fiction. But I strongly suspect, like the article itself indicates, that we're going to see not only more E-CAT stories this year, but also that we will see that pattern dramatically expand. When and if if does, we'll have more dots to connect.

John Hooper Burned in Gloucester

All John Hooper wanted to do was to pray. He went to bed at five the evening before, then rose early, on this day, February 9, 1555, so that he might pray in the early hours of the morning. When it was light, he asked that no one be allowed into his room until the hour of his execution, as he wished to continue in prayer.

At 8 a.m., the men who were to see that he was burned came for him. The sheriff's men were armed with clubs. John took one look at the weapons and said, "Master Sheriffs, I am no traitor, and you have no need to make such a work to take me to the place where I must suffer. If you had told me, I would have gone to the stake, and have troubled none of you."

John was a fervent Puritan. Although he had opposed making Lady Jane Grey queen, he was one of the first bishops arrested when the Catholic Queen Mary came to the English throne. John's strong opposition to Roman Catholic practices was well known. A man with a severe disposition, he had been harsh in his statements. He had even made enemies among fellow reformers.

However, he proved himself a worthy leader when he was finally made bishop of Gloucester. He would have been bishop sooner, but he refused to wear the designated gown. A stint in jail changed his mind. As bishop, he worked with great zeal. He examined all of his clergymen and found that some did not even know the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments or the Apostles' Creed. He set out to remedy this, and to educate the people, preaching every day, often up to four or five times. He was known for his kindness to the poor. The people of Gloucester loved him. In spite of that, under the new government his marriage cost him his position as bishop; and his views on the Lord's Supper (the Eucharist) and other doctrines, cost him his life. Because of his popularity, the executioners had strict orders not to allow him to preach to the crowd.

When he arrived at the stake, John knelt and prayed yet again. He was shown what was said to be a pardon from the queen: his--if only he would change his religious opinions. "If you love my soul, away with it!" he exclaimed, repeating the words for emphasis. He then asked the people to pray the Lord's prayer with him, which they did.

It was a cold morning and the reeds that were supposed to kindle the fire were wet, so John was in torment for a long time. Despite this, he stood quietly, speaking only to plead for more fire so that he could die quicker. The fire had to be rebuilt three times. During his ordeal, John repeated many times, "O Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me and receive my soul," and similar pleas.

And so he made a brave end. The stump of the stake at which he was burned was rediscovered in the twentieth century and shown to the curious. His writings influenced generations of Puritans and evangelicals.

Measles in Disneyland: Third MMR Shot and Vaccine Exemption Ban

There have been hundreds of media stories published in the U.S. and around the world since Jan. 14, 2015, the day after it was first reported that visitors to Disneyland got measles and presumably infected other people in California, Washington, Utah, and Colorado.¹
Like wildfire, the story spread globally even though there was - and still is - limited information about the 51 lab-confirmed cases of measles public health officials say are linked to the happiest place on earth.
According a Jan. 23 Health Advisory issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "no source case for the outbreak has been identified."²

Demonizing of Parents and Their Children

The U.S. has a population of more than 320 million people and 38 million people live in California, so it is curious why a handful of measles cases prompted one California newspaper to quickly place blame on parents making informed vaccine choices, calling them "ignorant" and engaged in a "self-absorbed rejection of science."³
Astroturfers⁴ and trolls^5,6 saw that kind of talk as a green light to do more of it on public comment boards, suggesting that children with vaccine-related brain injuries are genetic mutants and calling mothers of vaccine injured children "liars" and "witches."⁷

Pediatrician Leads Blame and Shame Game

Dr. James Cherry,⁸ a prominent UCLA pediatrician and infectious disease expert, publicly joined in the blame and shame game, hurling insults at parents declining to give children every one of the government recommended 69 doses of 16 vaccines, including two MMR shots.
Dr. Cherry said, "There are some pretty dumb people out there,"⁹ and "Some people are just terribly selfish."¹⁰
Name-calling is a convenient way to deflect attention from inconvenient truths about vaccine failures and the dissolving myth of vaccine acquired herd immunity.¹¹

Was Apolloinia's Martyrdom Suicide?

How much do you love Christ? Enough to die rather than to speak evil against him?

Apollonia of Alexandria loved Christ. According to legend she was born to a mother who was barren as long as she prayed to her heathen gods, but conceived when she resorted to Christian intercession. Apollonia became a Christian as a teen and eventually a deaconess in the church of Alexandria. These details cannot be verified from contemporary records, but the facts of her martyrdom can. Dionysius, bishop of Alexandria wrote Bishop Fabian of Rome a lengthy letter telling him what had happened. Eusebius of Caesaria quotes from it in his history.

Around ad 249, during the reign of Emperor Philip "The Arabian," Roman citizens throughout the empire celebrated the first 1,000 years of the existence of the city-state. (Tradition says Rome was founded around 750 BC.) As part of the big bash, the people offered sacrifices to their pagan gods.
In Alexandria, the scene turned ugly. One of the poets claimed that disaster would come because of the presence of "atheistic" Christians who did not sacrifice to the popular gods. The mob went wild. Three well-known Christians--Metras, Quinta and Serapion--were killed after cruel tortures. Government officials did nothing to stop these outrages.

Apollonia risked her life to comfort other Christians who were in prison, reminding them that suffering here is temporary, but the joy of living with Christ is eternal. Her courage cost her her bodily life. According to tradition, Apollonia was seized by the mob on this day, February 9, 249.
Wicked men beat her on the jaw, breaking out all of her teeth. Then they built a large bonfire and threatened to burn her alive unless she renounced Christ and repeated blasphemous words after them. Perhaps Apollonia pretended to think it over. She asked them to loose her for a moment and they did. Rather than risk betraying Christ, she immediately sprang into the fire of her own accord.

Those who saw this were astonished. How could faith give her such courage in the face of so cruel a death? Some became Christians. The early church respected her faith and courage, but a few wondered if her action were not a form of suicide. Eventually, Augustine of Hippo decided that her death was no more to be questioned than Samson's when he pulled down a pagan temple on himself to kill his enemies with strength God had restored to him in answer to prayer.

Bonhoeffer Transferred to Buchenwald Concentration Camp

Not just a great witness in his life, but also in the way he handled death. In his writings on the true cost of discipleship and the life he lived out, a great testimony for those who must one day follow him.

Where does a Christian fit in a nation which makes itself god?

The Lutheran theologian Deitrich Bonhoeffer answered that the Christian's duty is to resist such a regime. This landed him in a concentration camp and cost him his life.

Safe in exile in America, he abruptly returned to Germany. "I have come to the conclusion that I have made a mistake in coming to America. I shall have no right to participate in the reconstruction of the Christian life in Germany after the war if I did not share in the trials of this time with my people. Christians in Germany face the terrible alternative of willing the defeat of their nation in order that civilization may survive, or willing the victory of their nation and thereby destroying civilization. I know which of these alternatives I must choose. But I cannot make that choice in security."

In Germany Bonhoeffer worked with the underground resistance. He helped guide Jews to safety. Believing that Hitler was like a madman "driving a car into a group of innocent bystanders," he joined a plot to kill the Führer.

After he was arrested for his aid to the Jews, his role in the plot was discovered. There was little hope he would survive Nazi wrath. Nonetheless Bonhoeffer was personally at peace. Suffering, he said, had become a better key for understanding the world than happiness had ever been.

On this day February 7, 1945, he was transferred to the terrible Buchenwald Concentration Camp where many thousands of prisoners died, some under cruel medical experiments. Three months later Bonhoeffer corpse was added to the list of dead. He was hanged days before the allies freed the camp. He had fulfilled his own theology, aptly expressed in his book The Cost of Discipleship: "The one thing that matters is practical obedience. That will resolve [man's] difficulties and make him free to become the child of God."

When the government usurps God's place, what is the Christian to do? By his life and death, Bonhoeffer exemplified one solution. [We caution that scripture teaches it is not right to do evil that good may come.]

Shale gas drilling is slowing across the country, but a handful of companies are poking around this corner of the state looking for the next natural gas "play." If they succeed, Georgia could join the ranks of states reaping jobs, revenue and fears of environmental damage from energy production, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned.
It has been at least 30 years since Georgia - which has never produced a drop of oil or natural gas - has seen as much exploratory activity.
An Oklahoma-based company that leased 7,500 acres of land outside Dalton has two test wells in place and plans another nearby. Seventy miles away, near Cave Spring, a Texas oil, gas and development conglomerate plans a deeper well.
At least three other companies have recently researched the so-called Conasauga shale field, a 20-by-100 mile swath of farm and forest that runs from Alabama across Georgia and into Tennessee.
Georgia joins Tennessee and North Carolina as Southern states newly popular with wildcatters and major gas and oil companies.

Devastating Quake in New Madrid

Interesting to connect these two articles, this one from 200 years ago and recent developments of the oil and gas industry kind today...

Have you ever been in an earthquake? It is a frightening experience to feel the ground roll uncontrollably beneath you. What is believed to be the greatest earthquakes recorded in the central United States (although Missouri was a territory then, not a state) happened on this day, February 7, 1812 and it was terrifying. Estimated at 8.5 on the Richter scale, it killed as few people as it did only because Missouri was lightly settled at the time.

People screamed as the ground rumbled, vibrated and bucked with a deafening roar. Sinners fell to the ground and prayed their souls might be spared. To the evangelical, it seemed that the end of the age, prophesied in the Bible, was near. Christian slaves warned masters and mistresses that they were going to "catch it" now that the Lord was at hand. It certainly seemed that these black servants might be right.

This was the fourth or fifth major quake to strike the area in less than three months. Everyone agreed it was the worst. A dark cloud of dust filled the air. The stink of sulfur was strong. The Mississippi River flowed upstream. The town of New Madrid, Missouri collapsed fifteen feet and was completely destroyed. An area 150 miles long and forty miles wide sank three to nine feet. Geysers of sand and rock spewed up through fissures and drifted across the land, leaving a soft layer so deep, horses could not walk through it. Trees, houses and people disappeared into other fissures. Hundreds of acres of forest toppled. Stranded fish died when waters changed course.

In a Kentucky city, 400 miles away, chimneys slithered to the ground. Plaster cracked and church bells rang a thousand miles away in Montreal, Boston and New York. Boats foundered in South Carolina's Charleston River. Masonry cracked in Connecticut. Virginians reported they could scarcely stand up. Altogether, 2,000,000 square miles or more were shaken by the quake. The Bible predicts a mighty earthquake at the end of the world. The first New Madrid quake was also predicted--by the Indian chief Tecumseh. He said it would be a sign for the Indian tribes to reunite and drive the white men into the sea. When his words came true, thousands of braves joined him outside Detroit to give battle, but the predicted victory did not materialize.

Ironically, after the February quake, which was the last big one, some settlers pulled up and left Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky. As George Henry Crist wrote on February 8th, "If we do not get away from here the ground is going to eat us alive. We had another one of them earth quakes yesterday and today the ground still shakes at times. We are all about to go crazy -- from pain and fright...A lot of people thinks that the devil has come here. Some thinks that this is the beginning of the world coming to a end."

Merck senior management tried to pay off its own vaccine scientists to remain silent about scientific fraud

(NaturalNews) As the corporate media desperately attempts to dupe as many people as possible into getting MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccines for the protection of "the children," uncovered court documents revealing major vaccine fraud at Merck & Co., the multinational drug company that produces MMR vaccines for the U.S. market, are only getting the attention they deserve from the alternative media.

Back in 2010, two former Merck scientists, repulsed by what they saw taking place at the highest levels of the company, filed a False Claims Act in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The filing accuses Merck of lying about the safety and effectiveness of MMR vaccines, tampering with study data, defrauding the U.S. government and various other high-level crimes.

Claims by Merck that the mumps component of the MMR vaccine is "95 percent effective" are also questioned in the filing. Stephen Krahling and Joan Wlochowski say Merck senior management falsified data specifically on the effectiveness of the mumps vaccine, intentionally spiking blood samples with animal antibodies in order to trick the public into thinking that the vaccine is effective.

"Merck... added animal antibodies to blood samples to achieve more favorable test results, though it knew that the human immune system would never produce such antibodies, and that the antibodies created a laboratory testing scenario that 'did not in any way correspond to, correlate with, or represent real life... virus neutralization in vaccinated people,'" explains CourthouseNews.com.

Other alleged transgressions include Merck swindling the U.S. government out of "hundreds of millions of dollars for a vaccine that does not provide adequate immunization," as well as promoting the spread of mumps with its fraudulent vaccine. This elaborate scam, which the duo says has been taking place since the late 1990s, has allowed Merck to monopolize the vaccine market, specifically with regard to MMR vaccines.

Savonarola Burned Art Works

Savonarola slipped out of his home in Ferrara without saying goodbye to his parents. The 23-year old left secretly because he feared that his family would not approve his course of action; he was throwing aside years of medical and philosophical education to join the Dominicans. Convinced of the reality of an after-life which would bring everyone either dismal doom or glorious salvation, he became morose.

When he began to preach, his strong sense of right and wrong drove him to denounce the sins of the day. At first his sermons were too scholarly for the masses, but he simplified them. Large audiences heard him utter dark prophecies about the future of Italy and Florence and exclaim that the church was a prostitute.

Savonarola became abbot of San Marco at Florence. His allies formed a republic. Gangs of Dominicans roamed the streets begging and enforcing a dress code. Savonarola became a gnat, buzzing in the ears of corrupt Pope Alexander VI. He denounced the pope's sins and called on Europe's leaders to throw the wicked pontiff out of office.

For his part, Alexander worked to bring down the friar. But the pope could wait, for he realized that sooner or later the people would turn against Savonarola.

For the time being, however, Savonarola rode high in opinion. No building could hold the thousands who came for his sermons. He called on the Florentines to burn all books, paintings, carvings and any other luxury that drew their hearts away from the deeper things of God. Florence listened. On this day, February 7, 1497, he consigned the follies of the city in a great "bonfire of the vanities." Dirty pictures, gambling tables, books and art went up in smoke. Savonarola especially loathed paintings that made the Madonna look like a whore.

But in 1498, the situation changed. Although some of Savonarola's predictions came true, others failed. Bad decisions, not all Savonarola's fault, brought the city to starvation. Its money chests were empty. Alexander VI threatened an interdict which would cut off all religious functions from the people.

The people of Florence turned against the preacher. A Franciscan challenged Savonarola to an ordeal by fire. Savonarola's disciple Domenico da Pescia accepted in his place. Crowds gathered. The Franciscan chickened out. Cheated of their spectacle, the crowds blamed Savonarola. The next day he was arrested.

Between April 9th and May 23rd, church authorities tortured Savonarola again and again and forced him to recant. Each time, when he recovered from the torment, he took back his words--the last time with such fury that his interrogators were afraid. On May 22nd he was interrogated one last time. Seeing that he could not be moved, his interrogators sent him back to his cell in shackles and sentenced him to death.

The sentence was carried out May 23rd. Savonarola and two other friars were first hung and then burned. As the reformer's body was dumped into the fire, scoffers shouted, "If you can work miracles, work one now!" His hand flew up, two fingers extended, as if blessing the crowd, which panicked and fled from the square, crushing several children to death.

Having spent some ten or so years in Catholic circles, and traditional Catholic circles at that, one of the more potent images dominating the Roman faith in the 20th century is of course that of Fatima.  Our Lady of Fatima is the preeminent Marian apparition surrounding a series of purportedly prophetic revelations in 1917 to three Portuguese peasant children about imminent disasters to be let loose upon the West as a result of various immoralities and the supposed lack of conversion of Russia to the “Immaculate Heart of Mary.” Fatima.org summarizes the story as follows:

“In the apparition of July 13, Our Lady warned the three seers that if people did not stop offending God, He would punish the world “by means of war, hunger and persecution of the Church and of the Holy Father,” using Russia as His chosen instrument of chastisement. She told the children that “to prevent this, I shall come to ask for the Consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart” and promised that, by this single public act, Russia would be converted and peace would be given to the world.

 

The Mother of God cautioned that if Her requests were not granted, “Russia will spread its errors throughout the world, raising up wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer and various nations will be annihilated.”

 

Having myself attended years of traditional Latin masses, no one can experience modern Catholicism, even in its watered down Novus Ordo Missae versions without hearing all this.  Back in my more credulous 20s, I spent a good bit of time researching this event, and I think there are even copies of Fr. What’s his name’s exposes of the real, true, real secret of Fatima lying around my messy library. (I was even put on Fatima Crusader’s mailing list without my knowledge!)  With that said, I should also add that I’ve read a massive chunk of Malachi Martin’s published works, as well as countless texts on church history, Catholic theology, etc., so my analysis here is not coming from a stance of being alien to the wild world of modern Roman Catholicism.

My stance on this event is also not intended to be the standard, fundamentalist evangelical “debunking,” but rather to look at the larger geo-political setting that surrounds Our Lady of Fatima.  Although I am not a Roman Catholic, the goal here is not to promote Enlightenment rationalism, but rather to propose an espionage-based thesis for the so-called “revelations.”  The first place we want to look is Dr. Carroll Quigley’s revelations based on CFR private archives in regard to the banking houses of New York, London and Europe being the source of the 20th century’s world wars – world wars are banker’s wars.  Quigley writes:

“At the end of the war of 1914, it became clear that the organization of this system had to be greatly extended. Once again the task was entrusted to Lionel Curtis who established, in England and each dominion, a front organization to the existing local Round Table Group. This front organization, called the Royal Institute of International Affairs, had as its nucleus in each area the existing submerged Round Table Group.

Miracle, or western intelligence plot?

 

In New York it was known as the Council on Foreign Relations, and was a front for J. P. Morgan and Company in association with the very small American Round Table Group. The American organizers were dominated by the large number of Morgan “experts,” including Lamont and Beer, who had gone to the Paris Peace Conference and there became close friends with the similar group of English “experts” which had been recruited by the Milner group.

On this basis, which was originally financial and goes back to George Peabody, there grew up in the twentieth century a power structure between London and New York which penetrated deeply into university life, the press, and the practice of foreign policy. In England the center was the Round Table Group, while in the United States it was J. P. Morgan and Company or its local branches in Boston, Philadelphia, and Cleveland.”

 

For those that have spent a lot of time in Tragedy & Hope, you know the first hundred pages or so are about how awful Russia is.  This is because in the classic “Great Game,” the perennial enemy of the Anglo-American Establishment (another book title by Quigley) is Russia.  The only power that could rival the merchant sea power (England), is the great land power, Russia.  Other works like Gould and Fitzgerald’s Invisible History: Afghanistan’s Untold Story and Mark Curtis’ Secret Affairs also discuss at length the classic rivalry of these two powers, giving us a wider picture of the historical setting for the First and Second World Wars.

Athanasius and the Creed of Christ

Athanasius is so highly thought of in the annals of Christian history because in a time where holding a biblically correct or orthodox viewpoint left him in a dangerous minority position, he stood fast for the faith, and is largely responsible for stopping the Arian view from becoming the majority position in Christendom.  Of course the Lord had something to do with all that as well...:)


The historic Christian faith was forged in turbulent times and under perilous conditions. The creeds and doctrines that shaped our Christian identity emerged from intense theological battles.
There were times of physical violence in the process of defining the central teachings of the faith. For example, the question of exactly who Jesus was. Here is part of the story of the incredible conflict over that issue. Imagine this, if you can:

The Date: February 8, 356.
The Place: The church of Alexandria, Egypt
The Event: Armed troops barged in at the middle of a worship service to capture a single unarmed man -- the pastor, Athanasius.
    
Athanasius was one of the most honored names in all Christian history, but at this particular moment, he was on the outs with Emperor Constantius. This emperor, son of Constantine the Great, favored the Arian doctrine -- a teaching that Jesus was not fully God but a created being. In the Council of Nicea that earlier rejected this view, Athanasius had been the clearest speaker for the Orthodox position. The Arians longed to "get him" for the part he played in their defeat.

It seemed that their moment of triumph had finally come. Twice before, enemies had maneuvered him into exile, but this time they expected he'd be captured or killed. By rights they should have had him, too, because his sense of honor would not let him save his skin by fleeing. His monks pleaded with him to run when the troops first surrounded the church, but Athanasius would not budge. Even after the soldiers burst into the building, the bishop stayed glued to his seat. He would wait until he saw his people safely out, he said.

What saved his life was his body's weakness. Unused to the sight of blood, he fainted in horror. The monks hustled their unconscious hero out of the building in the confusion. For the third time since he became bishop, Athanasius headed into exile. It would not be his last. Indeed, these were the days when being a theologian could be a hazardous calling.

How Many Times Can a Man Bounce Back? 

        Most men would lose heart after one exile or two, especially when those exiles dragged on for as much as seven years. Athanasius endured five exiles under four emperors. Through it all, he persistently argued that Christ is fully divine. On that he would stake his life.

Hi, Your Highness! 

        Once he even confronted Constantine in Constantinople, refusing to step aside so the emperor's horse could pass. He defended himself on the spot and might have won the day, too, if his enemies had not accused him of using his influence to hold up grain shipments from Alexandria. Although Athanasius stoutly denied the charge, the angry emperor exiled him to Gaul (France). Accused by his enemies of murdering an opponent (even going so far as to pass around a hand that they claimed was from the corpse), he located the "dead" man and produced him at his trial. The charges were dropped. Still, his enemies did not give up. The stakes were high: influence on the emperor's mind and, through him, on the empire. The intrigue at court was fierce.
As political power swayed back and forth, Athanasius was either condemned or exonerated. He either trudged into exile or returned triumphantly to take up his duties as bishop, welcomed by the citizens of Alexandria.

        Athanasius survived repeated attacks because of the loyalty of his people and the Egyptian monks. Despite imperial threat and manhunt, the monks hid their beloved bishop for six years during his third exile. As for the people, the honor in which they held him was demonstrated after his first two-year exile. Delegates from Alexandria met him upon his return a hundred miles out of town--a three day walk-- as if he were a conquering hero. What a sight it was as they greeted him by flaring torchlight in the purple night!

The Arian heresy won its share of victories. The Goths became Arian, for example, and spread their doctrine across Europe by conquest. But by 525, even the Goths had converted to orthodox views. Athanasius, long dead, had prevailed in the cause for which he risked his life. Most Christians from then on confessed that Jesus was "very God of very God."
    
Outfoxing the Foxes and other Fascinating Facts         

Babyface. Athanasius had a baby face. To become bishop, he had to be at least thirty. So young did he look, that there was argument at his consecration whether he was really old enough to serve as bishop or not!
Reluctant Bishop. Athanasius was so reluctant to become bishop that he sent another man named Athanasius to answer the call of Alexander, his dying bishop. "You think to escape, but it cannot be," said Alexander.
Rome supports Athanasius. Julius I was bishop of Rome in Athanasius' day and gave this North African bishop refuge during his second exile.
Cruel George. George, the Arian bishop sent to replace Athanasius during his third exile, was a brutal pork contractor, who tortured people, trying to force them to accept a new creed. Alexandria rioted against him. Few mourned when George was assassinated.
Outfoxing the Foxes. On his fourth exile, Athanasius, now in his sixties, fled up the Nile, hotly pursued by his enemies. They hailed a boat coming down river and inquired if Athanasius were far ahead. "You're close now," came the shouted reply. "Hurry. You may catch them!" The pursuers strained at their oars while--you've guessed it--Athanasius and his crew merrily sped downstream!
Mobbed for "Magic." When Athanasius produced the missing man at his trial--the one he was supposed to have had killed, both hands intact--his enemies said it was done by magic and whipped up such a mob that Athanasius barely escaped with his life.

So What Was the Big Deal?

        Arius, whom Athanasius deposed, did maintain that Jesus was "divine" but not fully God. Rather, he was a created being. Athanasius insisted that Jesus was fully God. Is all this idle theological speculation? Not according to Athanasius. At stake was nothing less than this: God so loved the world that for our salvation He did not send one of His creatures to do the dirty work but came Himself.

Athanasius Exiled Again

Five thousand troops surrounded the church of St. Theonas in Alexandria, Egypt on this date February 8, 356. Inside, an all-night service had begun in preparation for communion the next day. Calmly Bishop Athanasius sat down and ordered a deacon to read Psalm 103. "Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me praise his holy name."

The soldiers burst through the doors, swords flashing, arrows flying. Christians screamed and tried to flee. "Get out, get out," hissed the monks to Athanasius. The Bishop refused to leave until the people were safe. In horror he watched as those who stumbled under the heels of the soldiers were trampled to death. He fainted. The monks seized him and dragged him from the platform.

"Where's Athanasius?" demanded the soldiers.

The bishop was not to be found. Miraculously, in the confusion, the monks had spirited away their venerated champion. For the third time since the Council of Nicea in 325, Athanasius went into exile.
At the Council of Nicea he had been a significant background figure in the dispute over Christ's divinity which Arians denied. There Emperor Constantine backed the virtually unanimous decision of the assembled Bishops. Later, however, the emperor fell under the sway of the Arians. Under Constantine's successors, Arians influenced the court at Constantinople. Athanasius' defenses of Christ's divinity became "politically incorrect." His firm championship of the Nicean position was viewed as political resistance by Arian partisans. To consolidate their political power, the Arians tried to seize control of the church and stifle the voice of the "traitor" Athanasius.

Constantinople sent Bishop George, an Arian, to fill Athanasius' place. He unleashed a spate of persecution, banishing sixteen orthodox bishops from Alexandria. Using terror and murder, George tried to force Egypt to accept a new creed in place of the Nicean. A price was placed on the head of Athanasius. Agents searched everywhere for him. But the Egyptians loyally hid their beloved teacher.
Eventually George was ousted. Athanasius returned. Twice more opponents forced him into exile, but eventually he died peacefully. Not so George: When he returned to Alexandria, a mob killed him.
The world always opposes any view of Christ which portrays him as the Only Begotten Son of God, our sole means of salvation. Athanasius' sufferings were the result of his stalwart defense of Christ. He deserves our admiration, for he defended sound doctrine regardless of personal cost.
