Rare phenomenon seen in the Cumbrian sky as autumn arrives in all its glory

If these two boys are looking for a pot of gold at the end of this ghostly arc, they are in for a disappointment.

Stretching between two country lanes, it looks as if a rainbow has gone up in a puff of smoke – and with it, the fairytale riches.

But the young ramblers can at least be satisfied that they have had a brush with one of nature’s rarities – a fogbow.

The phenomenon is similar to a rainbow but appears in fog or mist rather than rain showers.

Rainbows are formed when sunlight hits large water droplets, displaying a spectrum of colour.
