Mystery of Dead Birds at Intersection Causes Concern

By: KOLR10 News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo -- A flock of birds found dead at the intersection of Erie and Fremont in Springfield has caught a lot of attention from viewers. Several passersby sent in pictures and estimate there are about forty to one hundred dead birds. There are phone and power lines in the area, but the birds were not near those lines. The birds were in the road on Fremont with the vast majority in the northbound lanes. One woman described the scene as "eerie".

We contacted the National Weather Service who said there was no volatile weather overnight that would have caused this issue. We've contacted ornithologists and avian specialists at Missouri State and the University of Missouri in order to ,hopefully, find some answers. We've heard back from one biologist who has sent us information for another specialists. We will keep you updated about what we find out.
