WHO says Dengue showing global ‘epidemic potential’
January 18, 2012 – HEALTH – The World Health Organization said on Wednesday that it had charted progress in the fight against tropical diseases but warned that dengue fever was spreading at an alarming rate. “In 2012, dengue ranked as the fastest spreading vector-borne viral disease, with an epidemic potential in the world, registering a 30-fold increase in disease incidence over the past 50 years,” the Geneva-based UN agency said in a report released Wednesday.
The increased transmission rate of the deadly mosquito-borne disease was due to climate change and a greater movement of people, the agency said. An annual two million cases of dengue fever were reported over the last two years by 100 countries, with between 5,000 to 6,000 of them resulting in death. But the WHO’s Raman Velayudhan said the disease was likely underreported and estimated there were as many as 50 million cases a year with more than 20,000 deaths.
Dengue is spread by one of four viruses transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. It causes high fever, headaches, itching and joint pains. At an advanced stage it can lead to hemorrhaging and death. But the agency also reported “unprecedented progress against 17 neglected tropical diseases,” saying for example that rabies had been eliminated in several countries. It added that guinea worm — a water-borne infection that causes agonizing pain and leaves sufferers unable to function for months — was on its way to total eradication. –Terra Daily

The villages were flooded after the enormous waves surged over the sea defences leaving some homeowners contending with water that was waist-high.
Officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Region Three Administration, including Chairman Julius Faerber, visited the areas the next day and installed equipment to flush the flooded water back into the ocean. Villagers of Anna Catherina said that the ministry also ordered that the main drain off of the Sea View Road be dug deeper in order to prevent more flooding.
However, they were unable to remove all of the garbage washed ashore.
Officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Region Three Administration, including Chairman Julius Faerber, visited the areas the next day and installed equipment to flush the flooded water back into the ocean. At Cornelia Ida, another resident recalled
that she was sitting in her veranda when she saw the waves start to ride over the sea defences. She said that the water ripped away her fence and began to swell in her home. She explained that it was normal for the village of Cornelia Ida to experience high spring tides but this was the worst since the historic 2005 flooding of the coastland of Guyana.
“The water de so high it cover half of my car,” a man said. “Is till when they come and fix the dam and put in that culvert that the water start to drain off a little.”

Diet soda, aspartame shown to destroy kidney function
I don't carry these articles much, but I'm fully aware of the hideous nature of the "diet drugs" like nutrasweet and aspartame. It should be noted that ADD and ADHD were almost unknown and certainly unnamed until aspartame became a major additive to the American diet. Just to show you how awful it is, those who use diet foods and drinks don't even lose weight. Save yourself and dump this garbage down the drain should you have any.
In an 11-year study by scientists at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, there was a strong positive correlation found between degeneration of kidney function and consumption of aspartame-containing diet soda.
Published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the study followed 3,318 women for a number of years as they consumed diet soda containing artificial sweeteners like Aspartame. Scientists took into account each participant's age, blood pressure, smoking habits (when applicable), and pre-existing conditions like heart disease or diabetes, and administered food frequency questionnaires in 1984, 1986, 1990, 1994, and 1998. Two or more diet drinks daily, it was found, led to a doubled risk in fast-paced kidney decline.
A separate study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that, contrary to safety claims made by the manufacturers of aspartame, health-related concerns including non-Hodgkin lymphoma and leukemia still abound. While study authors at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School admitted that there were other variables to consider, such as the sex of the consumer in that particular case, they remained troubled by the risks associated with diet soda.
It's worth noting that diet soda is also high in sodium - and in greater amounts than found in sodas sweetened with sugar or corn starch (which were not examined in either study).

It was only after a research psychiatrist concluded that aspartic acid - a key ingredient in aspartame - made holes in mice brains that the FDA rounded up a task force to investigate Searle's claims. The investigation unveiled a series of falsified claims, corrupted study results, and information that simply wasn't there. Although the FDA moved for further investigation of Searle by grand jury, US Attorney Thomas Sullivan and Assistant US Attorney William Conlon didn't lift a finger to help. Conlon, however, found a job at the law firm representing Searle.
Since then, the genetically modified creation, aspartame, has been implicated in a number of studies as potentially causing tumors, seizures, brain holes, and reproductive problems. But the mainstream media won't report on the aspartame-cancer link.
Other Sweeteners, the Good and the Bad
Other artificial sweeteners, like sucralose (supposedly "made from sugar"), have been implicated in other health problems like changing the gut flora environment and preventing proper nutrient absorption, according to the January 2008 issue of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health.
Thus far, Stevia has drawn little fire comparative to artificial sweeteners, although excessive use might be cautioned as with anything. Stevia is, however, safer to use than artificial or GMO sugar, especially for diabetics.

New Zealand volcano restless: Mt Tongariro has continued to emit steam and gas but beneath the mountain, things have been quiet so far this year. The Te Maari craters, the site of eruptions in August and November last year, continue to be active with continuous emissions of steam and volcanic gas, GNS Science said. The gas was coming from a large fumarole and crack in a cliff just east of the Upper Te Maari crater. The main Upper Te Maari crater is also discharging gas but at a lesser rate. “Gas and steam emissions from the volcano will continue to be a feature of the mountain for several years to come,” GNS head vulcanologist Gill Jolly said. GNS Science vulcanologists are planning to take new gas measurements to compare with those made at the end of December. Aerial observations at the end of last year showed a large amount of material had filled in the Upper Te Maari crater in the November 21 eruption but the main shape of the crater had not changed. Meanwhile seismic activity had remained relatively low, with no earthquakes yet recorded beneath the mountain this year. GNS said Tongariro continued to be in a heightened state of unrest and eruptions could occur with little or no warning. –Stuff
Mexico volcano becomes more explosive: Colima volcano has entered a new eruptive phase with more explosions during the past days. On January 6, the first explosion produced an ash column of 3 km height. The second explosion occurred 4 days later on Thursday 10 January. The second blast destroyed the lava dome that had been emplaced in 2007 in the summit crater. On Sunday January 13 the third explosion occurred, but the event was smaller than the previous two. The eruptions expelled approximately 1.5 million cubic meters of volcanic material that was part of the old dome and left a new crater of 220 m diameter inside the 420 m wide summit crater. –Volcano Discovery

Source of Pennsylvania Walmart illnesses still a mystery
This is a classic example of a "social test" being run by the CIA or some other alphabet soup agency. Going back to the early 50's, these agencies, the CIA being the most obvious, have no problem with testing new drugs, compounds, or weapons on American citizens, then slipping away from the damage done. And one more compound that may be used in large scale against the USA is stored away for a very bad day somewhere in our future. Remember the symptoms, because you are likely to see them on a much larger scale somewhere else in the near future.
Things seemed to be back to normal at the Center Township Walmart store on Sunday, one day after the store was evacuated and closed for several hours, after customers and employees became ill inside.
But while the problem that caused the illnesses seemed to have cleared up, its cause remained a mystery.
"Our readings didn't come up with anything, (Beaver County Hazardous Materials Team) didn't come up with anything," said Center's fire Chief Bill Brucker on Sunday. "I don't know if we'll ever find out the cause."
Center firefighters were sent to the store around 7 p.m. Saturday, after both customers and store employees became ill inside the store, Brucker said.
"There was nausea, some vomiting, and several cases of upper respiratory issues," Brucker said. "The decision was made to evacuate the store while we tried to figure out what was going on."
Brucker said the cause seemed to be centered near the back of the sprawling store, on the grocery side; Walmart workers had roped off several aisles in that area.
"I wasn't back there long before I started to feel something in my throat," he said. "I couldn't pinpoint a smell or a cause, though."
Center firefighters used some of the department's equipment to test air quality in the store, but Brucker said he also called in the county's haz-mat crew to conduct further tests.
"They couldn't get good readings, though, because the store had reversed the (heating and air-conditioning system) and the air was clearing," Brucker said.
Officials at Walmart's corporate office did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Brucker didn't know how many people were sickened in the store, but two people were taken by ambulance to be evaluated; at least three others went to the hospital in private vehicles. Brucker said he hadn't heard reports that any of the illnesses were serious.
Emergency officials left the store around 11 p.m., and the store re-opened around midnight, Brucker said.

World still grappling with epidemic of sinkholes: Chinese village suffers over 20 sinkholes in five months
January 15, 2013 – CHINA – Residents in the village of Lianyuan in southern China’s Hunan Province have been treading rather gingerly these last few months. Over 20 sinkholes have opened up in the ground since last September. The cave-ins, which range in size, have seen houses collapse and rivers run dry. And there is never any warning as to where and when the sinkholes occur. According to local authorities, the main reason for the cave-ins is the number of coalmines in the area. It is not clear what steps are being taken to prevent further sinkholes from appearing. –MSN

On November 28th, 2012, during the third season of
“Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura” the TruTV program looked into
“human-animal hybrid experiments that supposedly have gone beyond the Petri dish
with rumors that a real-life ‘Planet of the Apes’ is being created.” [i]
The
producers had contacted one of the authors of the upcoming book Exo-Vaticana (Tom) late in 2011 with a
request for help. They wanted to know whether scientists had secretly crossed
the Rubicon with regard to human-animal genetic experiments. Though Tom spent
numerous hours as a consultant providing documentation and expert witnesses, he
turned down repeated requests to be part of Season 3: Episode 4 “Manimal,”
described on Ventura’s website this way: “Science has made major breakthroughs
in drug research and transplant technology by experimenting on ‘chimeras’–
human/animal embryo hybrids. But these seemingly noble goals may be covering up
a much more nefarious purpose – to create half human, half ape super soldiers,
paving the way for a real life Planet of the Apes showdown.” (The producers
actually offered on three separate occasions to fly Tom to set locations in the
United States to meet with Jesse Ventura and the film crew, but he turned them
down for reasons that will be revealed later. Conversely, though Tom declined
their repeated invitation to be on the show, he did set them up with Professor
William B. Hurlbut, Consulting Professor for the Department of Neurology and
Neurological Sciences at Stanford University Medical Center and a member of the
U.S. President’s Council on Bioethics who will be featured with both of the
authors of Exo-Vaticana and over a dozen experts in an upcoming documentary
expose on Transhumanism, tentatively scheduled for release in 2013). Among the
scores of research papers, DARPA budget line items, suspect locations where
human-animal experimentation ethics may have passed the curtain of
acceptability, and media reports that Tom forwarded to the producers was a
Reuters news article dated November 9, 2009, titled “Scientists Want Debate on
Animals with Human Genes,” which hinted at just how far scientists have come and
how far they intend to go with human and animal hybridization. The news piece
started out, “A mouse that can speak? A monkey with Down’s Syndrome? Dogs with
human hands or feet? British scientists want to know if such experiments are
acceptable,” [ii]
then continued with revelations that scientists
inside Britain were comfortable now with up to 50/50 animal-human integration.
The article implied that not all the research currently under design is kept at
the embryonic level, and that fully mature monstrosities (like the creature in
the 2010 movie Splice) are quietly
under study.

It didn’t
take long to surmise if the Reuters article was simply speculating or if indeed
there were scientists already experimenting with human-animal creations beyond
the embryonic stage. In July, 2011, Britain’s Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS)
admitted in a 148 page report how such science is advancing so quickly and being
conducted in so many laboratories around the world without appropriate oversight
that an international regulatory commission is urgently needed to oversee the
creation of these part-human part-animal part-synthetic chimeras. Interestingly,
the AMS did not call for a prohibition of the science, but rather an
international supervisory body under which the science can fully and officially
proceed. In the précis of their analysis they considered “research that involves
the introduction of human DNA sequence into animals, or the mixing of human and
animal cells or tissues, to create entities we refer to as ‘animals
containing human material’” (ACHM). [iii]
They then confessed: “Such approaches are
long-established, and thousands of different ACHM have been used in biomedical
research, yet they have received relatively little public discussion.” [iv] What type beings did Britain’s leading scientists know of or suspect
as now secretly under study? From the summary of their paper we find:
- Extensive modification of the
brain of an animal, by implantation of human derived cells, which might result
in altered cognitive capacity approaching human ‘consciousness’ or ‘sentience’
or ‘humanlike’ behavioural capabilities.
- Situations where functional
human gametes (eggs, sperm) might develop from precursor cell-types in an
animal; and where fertilisation between human and animal gametes might then
occur [yes folks, we are talking here about animals that can conceive from human
sperm and give birth to human-animals].
- Cellular or genetic modifications which could result in animals with
aspects of humanlike appearance (skin type, limb or facial structure) or
characteristics, such as speech [in other words, Nephilim]. [v]
Only one day after the Academy
of Medical Sciences circulated this report, the popular UK Mail Online published
a story detailing how in just one instance alone (of potentially tens of
thousands):
Scientists have created more than 150 human-animal hybrid
embryos in British laboratories. The hybrids have been produced secretively over
the past three years by researchers looking into possible cures for a wide range
of diseases. The revelation comes just a day after a committee of scientists
warned of a nightmare ‘Planet of the Apes’ scenario in which work on
human-animal creations goes too far. [vi]
While such chimeras are supposedly destroyed at the embryonic
level, experts involved in the field who were interviewed by Reuters admitted
“some scientists in some places want to push boundaries.” [vii]
In other words, there are most likely Splice-like
creatures in laboratory settings now, locations that these scientists have left
unmentioned. Martin Bobrow, professor of medical genetics at Cambridge
University hinted why this is the case: “There is a whole raft of new scientific
techniques that will make it not only easier but also more important to be able to do these cross-species
experiments” [emphasis added]. [viii] One place where researchers may have already considered this
research to be so “important” that it justifies pushing those “boundaries” the
British scientists alluded to, is the Yerkes National Primate Research Center at
Emory University in Georgia (originally located in Orange Park, Florida). It is
one of eight national primate research centers funded by the National Institutes
of Health, both of which have shown interest in combining animal and human
genetics to create a new species. The Discovery Channel on March 27, 1998 (in an
episode of Unsolved History) discussed a report by Dr. Gordon Gallup, a
psychologist from the University at Albany, on the Yerkes National Primate
Research Center in which he confessed “a human-chimp hybrid was successfully
engendered and born [at the center] but was destroyed by the scientists soon
after.” [ix] This should come as no surprise, as Emory’s professors including
Rabbi Michael Broyde have argued very recently that Jewish law would support
animalized humans so long as the technology produces superior people. In an
October 7, 2011 article on the University’s website, Broyde says:

individuals, or animals, are combined, already has resulted in amazing

Professor Broyde is correct in stating that genetically
altering “the traits of different individuals… has resulted in amazing
combinations.” In fact, the first known genetically altered humans were
born over a decade ago as a result of an experimental program at the Institute
for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St Barnabas in New Jersey. An article
at that time explained part of the research, saying, “The babies were born to
women who had problems conceiving. Extra genes from a female donor were inserted
into their eggs before they were fertilized in an attempt to enable them to
conceive. Genetic fingerprint tests on two one-year-old children confirm that
they have inherited DNA from three adults—two women and one man.” [xi] Concerning these experiments, Dr. Joseph Mercola points out
something very important:
Today, these children are in
their early teens, and while the original study claims that this was “the first
case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal healthy
children,” later reports put such claims of absolute success in dispute [meaning
not all the genetically engineered kids were necessarily healthy]. Still, back
in 2001, the authors seemed to think they had it all under control, stating:
“These are the
first reported cases of germline mtDNA genetic modification which have led to
the inheritance of two mtDNA populations in the children resulting from
ooplasmic transplantation. These mtDNA fingerprints demonstrate that the
transferred mitochondria can be replicated and maintained in the offspring,
therefore being a genetic modification without potentially altering
mitochondrial function.”
Dr. Mercola continues: “It’s relevant to understand that these
children have inherited extra genes—that of two women and one man—and will be
able to pass this extra set of genetic traits to their own offspring. One of the
most shocking considerations here is that this was done—repeatedly—even though
no one knows what the ramifications of having the genetic traits of three
parents might be for the individual, or for their subsequent offspring. Based on
what I’ve learned about the genetic engineering of plants, I’m inclined to say
the ramifications could potentially be vast, dire, and completely unexpected.”

For those inclined to believe the astonishing report above was
an isolated incident, British scientists repeated the same experiments in 2008,
and in 2012 the Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU) conducted similar
research aimed at producing genetically engineered super babies. [xiii]

forms of human genetic tinkering have been secretly conducted outside public or
congressional review (historical precedence suggests many, many times), it is
important to understand how germline genetic engineering as was used in this one
example where thirty genetically modified children were created reflects the
very modus operandi that fallen angels used with Nephilim—to introduce heritable
modifications to the human genotype that

human beings in concentration camps to test their genetic theories, to the U.S.
where up until the 1970s more than sixty thousand Americans were sterilized
after being deemed of inferior genetic stock, the dream of one day advancing the
next step in human evolution through engineering homo-superior has always had
its champions. The difference until lately has been the Frankensteinian
visionaries lacked biotechnological skills and the public’s will to enable
“large-scale genetic and neurological engineering of ourselves.” [xviii] Today, that has changed, the technology has arrived, and the will to
birth a new form of man has at least entered its fledgling state if not secretly
advanced altogether. Even the recent Olympics underscored this science, pointing
out the specter of clandestinely modified humans. Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen’s
superhuman-like performance led John Leonard, the director of
the World Swimming Coaches Association, to describe the 16-year-old’s
world-setting feat as ‘suspicious’, ‘disturbing’ and ‘unbelievable’. Authorities
who tested Ye Shiwen for drug abuse should have also checked to see ‘if there is
something unusual going on in terms of genetic manipulation,’ he said.

the World Anti-Doping Agency, agreed, saying he ‘would not be surprised at all’
if genetic enhancements were not now being secretly used on humans. [xx]

dystopian ‘Brave New World’ is already slipping in under most of the public’s
radar. Human pre-natal diagnosis, screening foetal genomes, and designer
children were just the first cracks in the dam holding back incremental changes
due the human genetic reservoir this century, and experts are now admitting it.

To assure tomorrow’s snake people not only see in the dark but
are appropriately plugged into the end-times grid they will serve, the looming
reptilian-humans will also have Borg-like “physical and digital enhancements
such as cybernetic implants and advanced machine-interfacing technologies”
according to the study. [xxii]
Whenever these authors speak on the subject of transhumanism
and the looming “human enhancement” era, people are surprised to learn the many
ways in which the United States government has committed taxpayer money to
institutions such as the Case Law School (Cleveland, Ohio) for developing the
actual guidelines that will be used for setting government and public policy
around the next step in human evolution through genetic alteration. Maxwell
Mehlman, the professor of bioethics at the Case School of Medicine, received
nearly a million dollars not long ago to lead a team of law professors,
physicians, and bioethicists over a two-year project “to develop standards for
tests on human subjects in research that involves the use of genetic
technologies to enhance ‘normal’ individuals.”[xxiii] Following the initial study, Mehlman began traveling the United
States offering two university lectures: “Directed Evolution: Public Policy and
Human Enhancement” and “Transhumanism and the Future of Democracy.” These talks
are designed to inform and persuade college students on the need for society to
comprehend how emerging fields of science have already set in motion what some
are calling “the Hybrid Age,” a time when what it means to be human will be
forever changed.
It’s revealing that many of these technocrats admit being
influenced by the works of men like Friedrich Nietzsche (from whom the phrase
“God is dead” derives) and Goethe, the author of Faust. Nietzsche was the originator of
the übermensch or “Overman” that Adolf
Hitler dreamed of engineering, and the “entity” that man according to Nietzsche
will eventually evolve into. Like the ancient Watchers before them,
transhumanists dream of giving life to Nietzsche’s Übermensch by remanufacturing
men with animals, plants, and other synthetic life-forms through, among other
things, the use of recombinant dna
technology, germline engineering, and transgenics, in which the genetic
structure of one species is altered by the transfer of genes from another. While
in the United States, George W. Bush once called for legislation to
“prohibit…creating human-animal hybrids, and buying, selling, or patenting human
embryos,” [xxiv] the prospect of animalized humans “is a subject of serious
discussion in certain scientific circles,” writes senior counsel for the
Alliance Defense Fund, Joseph Infranco. “We are well beyond the science fiction
of H. G. Wells’ tormented hybrids in the
Island of Doctor Moreau; we are in a time where scientists are seriously
contemplating the creation of human-animal hybrids.”[xxv] The former chairman of the
President’s Council on Bioethics, Leon Kass, may have said it best in the
introduction to his book, Life, Liberty
and the Defense of Dignity: The Challenges of Bioethics:
Human nature
itself lies on the operating table, ready for alteration, for eugenic and
psychic “enhancement,” for wholesale redesign. In leading laboratories, academic
and industrial, new creators are confidently amassing their powers and quietly
honing their skills, while on the street their evangelists [transhumanists] are
zealously prophesying a posthuman future. For anyone who cares about preserving
our humanity, the time has come for paying attention.[xxvi]

Is China preparing for nuclear war? Beijing hardens subways for nuclear, gas attacks
January 13, 2013 – CHINA - China recently upgraded its subway system in Beijing and revealed that its mass transit was hardened to withstand nuclear blasts or chemical gas attacks in a future war, state-run media reported last month. The disclosure of the military aspects of the underground rail system followed completion and opening of a new subway line in the Chinese capital Dec. 30, along with the extension of several other lines. The subway upgrade is part of an effort to ease gridlocked traffic in the city of 20 million people.
According to Chinese civil defense officials quoted Dec. 5 in the Global Times, a newspaper published by the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, the subway can “withstand a nuclear or poison gas attack.”
A U.S. official said the disclosure of the subway’s capabilities to withstand attack is unusual, since it highlights Beijing’s strategic nuclear modernization program, something normally kept secret from state-controlled media.
The strategic nuclear buildup includes the expansion of offensive nuclear forces, missile defenses, and anti-satellite arms. China is building new long-range mobile missiles, including the DF-41, and plans to deploy up to eight new ballistic missile submarines. Reports from Asia indicate the Chinese military is also planning to build new long-range strategic nuclear bombers.
Russia too is expanding its nuclear forces with new submarines and missiles. Moscow announced last year that it is also constructing some 5,000 underground bomb shelters in Russia’s capital in anticipation of a possible future nuclear conflict.
By contrast, the U.S. government has done little to bolster civil defense measures, preferring the largely outdated concept of mutual assured destruction that leaves populations vulnerable to attack and building only limited missile defenses that the Obama administration has said are not designed to counter Chinese or Russian nuclear strikes. The Obama administration instead is seeking deep cuts in U.S. nuclear forces as part of President Barack Obama’s policy of seeking the elimination of all nuclear arms.
According to the Global Times report, the new subway lines were “designed to be used in the event of an emergency, for underground evacuation from one station to another, emergency shelter, and storage for emergency supplies.”
A military engineer identified only as Hu and as part of the Chinese military’s Second Artillery Corps, which builds and deploys China’s nuclear arsenal, helped design the civil defense aspects of the subway. Special steel-reinforced gates installed on all subway tunnels and used to separate stations are one key feature of the reinforced subway. Hu said it is designed to protect people who seek shelter during a heavy storm, toxic gas attack, or a nuclear strike.
“The station has three hours of breathable air after the gates are closed, isolating the station from the outside world,” Hu was quoted as saying. “Although each gate weighs around 7 tons, it takes just three minutes for two adults to open or close it manually,” she said. The new blast gates were introduced into subway construction projects in 2007.
A second Chinese official, identified in the report as Liang, said each subway also has an air filtration system in case of a chemical weapons gas attack. The system is designed to keep air flowing into the station. “People can actually shelter in the subway for more than three hours because of this system,” Liang said. Above-ground subway exits also can be sealed during an attack, Liang said, using heavy blast doors concealed behind temporary walls. Additional civil defense barriers and doors are being installed in the Beijing subway later, according to Cao Yanping, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Civil Air-Raid Shelter.
Jiang Hao, a Chinese military engineer from the 4th Engineer Design & Research Institute of General Staff Department, told the newspaper that blast gates already are in use in cities such as Nanjing, in Jiangsu Province, and Shenyang, in Liaoning Province. “The new facilities also have other defensive capabilities like emergency communication equipment at each station, which makes effective communication possible during a conflict,” Jiang Hao, the engineer, told reporters in Beijing. China’s network of underground tunnels for nuclear weapons and missiles was disclosed only recently, and highlighted in Georgetown University’s Asian Arms Control Project, dubbed it China’s “Great Underground Wall.” –Washington FB

Add one more weird story to Montauk lore. No time travel programs or hybrid animals washing up on the beaches this time, just random explosions. At least it's rarely dull there, it would seem...
Police are investigating a mysterious exploding sound that has been occurring intermittently in Montauk for months.
Investigators believe someone is setting off a large mortar fireworks, but they have no arrests have been made since officially beginning an investigation in October.
The explosions, about a half-dozen or so, mainly occur in the evening, on weekends, sporadically, and only once on any given day. The most recent sound was reported on Sunday, police said.
They are reported being heard in various areas around the hamlet, making it that much more difficult to pinpoint who is behind them.
They've mainly been coming from around the golf course and Second House, according to East Hampton Town Police Chief Ed Ecker, who lives in Montauk and heard the sound for himself two weeks ago.
He described it as "a whizzing noise" when it's going up in the air, and then "a big bang." He said, "It sounds just like big fireworks that you would use at Fourth of July."
Officers have observed a flash of light in the sky, coupled with a big bang. Some residents have said they sound like utility transformers exploding. Anecdotally, some residents tell East Hampton Patch the sounds rattle windows and shake the ground.
Lt. Chris Hatch, the Montauk precinct commander, said it has been difficult to develop information, as people haven't reported them to police right away. Some residents in Montauk report that the explosions have been happening for much longer than three months. Hatch said it is difficult to say since some cases may have been logged differently, such as gunshots from hunters or transformer explosions.
Plus, without any location, "The evidence is gone before its started," he said. Officers have canvassed neighborhoods. "We've been chasing this for three months now," he said.
Hatch said they've found no damage - no burn marks in the streets, no burnt mailboxes or garbage cans. "My concern is that someone is going to have an accident with the fireworks, or they are going to land on a house," he said.
Rumors that someone is setting off a bomb or trying to make a bomb have not been substantiated, Hatch said. "All indications right now are that these are commercially prepared fireworks."

The U.S. is sending troops to 35 African nations under the guise of fighting Al Qaeda and related terrorists.Democracy Now notes:
U.S. Army teams will be deploying to as many as 35 African countries early next year for training programs and other operations as part of an increased Pentagon role in Africa. The move would see small teams of U.S. troops dispatched to countries with groups allegedly linked to al-Qaeda, such as Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger. The teams are from a U.S. brigade that has the capability to use drones for military operations in Africa if granted permission. The deployment could also potentially lay the groundwork for future U.S. military intervention in Africa.NPR reports:

Is a Planetary Cooling Spell Straight Ahead?
All climate scientists agree that the sun affects Earth’s climate to some extent. They only disagree about whether or not the effect form the sun is minor compared to man-made causes.We noted in 2011:
This week, scientists from the US Solar Observatory and the US Air Force Research Laboratory have discovered – to their great surprise – that the sun’s activity is declining, and that we might experience the lowest solar output we’ve seen since 1645-1715. The Register describes it in dramatic tones:NASA reports this week that we may be on the verge of another Maunder Minimum (a period with an unusually low number of sunspots, leading to colder temperatures):
What may be the science story of the century is breaking this evening.Scientists who are convinced that global warming is a serious threat to our planet say that such a reduced solar output would simply buy us more time … delaying the warming trend, but not stopping or reversing it.
On the other hand, scientists who are skeptical about global warming say that the threat is a new mini ice age. (Remember that scientists have been convinced in the past that we would have a new ice age, and even considered pouring soot over the arctic in the 1970s to help melt the ice – in order to prevent another ice age. Obama’s top science advisor was one of those warning of a new ice age in the 1970s. And see this.)
Much has been made of the probable connection between the Maunder Minimum, a 70-year deficit of sunspots in the late 17th-early 18th century, and the coldest part of the Little Ice Age, during which Europe and North America were subjected to bitterly cold winters. The mechanism for that regional cooling could have been a drop in the sun’s EUV output; this is, however, speculative.NASA explains that interactions between the sun, sources of cosmic radiation and the Earth are very complicated, and it takes an interdisciplinary team of heliophysicists, chemists and others to quantify what is really going on. And the Earth’s climate is also affected by cosmic radiation.

The sun could be on the threshold of a mini-Maunder event right now. Ongoing Solar Cycle 24 is the weakest in more than 50 years. Moreover, there is (controversial) evidence of a long-term weakening trend in the magnetic field strength of sunspots. Matt Penn and William Livingston of the National Solar Observatory predict that by the time Solar Cycle 25 arrives, magnetic fields on the sun will be so weak that few if any sunspots will be formed. Independent lines of research involving helioseismology and surface polar fields tend to support their conclusion.
